The evening was lovely with a white moon over the frozen lake. The Alpine resort-town with luxury hotels and private chalets was sprawled across a snow-draped hillside above the lake, surrounded by forested hills and dramatic peaks. Trudy’s house was within comfortable walking distance just outside St. Moritz, and Krista went with Uncle Franz along a narrow dirt trail, now covered with new-fallen snow illuminated by the moonlight.
Within a matter of minutes they were away from the tourist attractions among stately Alpine trees. The gaiety of the town was muffled by the sighing of the wind in the pine branches. They passed several private chalets, and saw older Engadine-style houses scattered farther from the lake toward the hills.
When they were still some distance from Trudy’s house, Franz slowed to a stroll. “All right, Krista, we can talk here if we keep our voices low.”
Amid the still beauty, Krista explained her bizarre meeting with Einer Seitz, from his appearance on the train as a priest to the meeting at the ancient cathedral. Franz grew visibly upset that Seitz had involved her.
“I was told this afternoon he would contact me, but I had no idea he would use you,” he murmured angrily. “He must have been watching you for the last week in Zurich, making plans. Unfortunately for our American friends, matters went not only awry, but someone—a personal friend to me and an ally of Switzerland—has been killed. All because of Seitz!”
She had never seen Franz display such passion and it alerted her to the real danger they must be in. She looked at him, trying to shield him from her own fear. A friend, killed? Franz’s dislike of Seitz convinced her they were not comrades-in-arms for an honorable cause.
“Uncle Franz, don’t be alarmed for me, I managed the ordeal well enough, though he’s certainly an unpleasant man. I did get something of value in return. Yes, it’s true. Very important personal information to me.” She thought of the ring and saw suspicion tighten his usually pleasant features. Did he guess what it might be? How could he, unless he knew Seitz had information about Anna Klossner? She was anxious to delve into the matter of the ring, yet she must move cautiously. Even if Franz did know about Anna, he might not be willing to tell her.
He stopped on the road as they drew near the family lodge, which was within sight of Trudy’s house. Lights burned invitingly in the large double-storied pine-and-stucco building. Later tonight she would see Cousin Henrich and Veena, and after a warm welcome with hot chocolate and fondue, she would again have access to her warm and cozy childhood bedroom. She resented Einer Seitz for interjecting his presence into what would have been a pleasant homecoming.
They stood, two dark silhouettes against the brightness of the wintry moon. Franz bit on his pipe, his unreadable eyes shielded in the shadows. “What information did he give you, Krista?”
She knew she shouldn’t have hinted of it yet. It wasn’t the right time.
